2016 Norfolk Harborfest® Parade of Sail, Presented by WVEC 13 News Now

The spectacular Norfolk Harborfest® Parade of Sail, under the direction of the Virginia Pilots Association, will enter the Downtown Norfolk Harbor on Friday, June 10th at approximately noon. Following tradition, this impressive fleet will include tall ships, Navy ships, USCG Cutters, Public Safety vessels, character vessels, sleek power cruisers, sailing craft, antique and classic wooden boats, military vessels, tugs and more! Thousands of onlookers stationed at vantage points along the Elizabeth River will be able to witness this expansive fleet as it dances down the river towards Town Point Park.

The following is a list of visiting tall ships, Navy ships, and character vessels:

• THE LIBERTAD: Home port: Argentina

ARA Libertad is scheduled to arrive on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at approximately 8am. She is a steel hulled, full rigged, class “A” sailing ship that serves as a school vessel in the Argentine Navy. One of the largest and fastest tall ships in the world, holder of several speed records, she was designed and built in the 1950s by the Río Santiago Shipyard, Ensenada, Argentina. Her maiden voyage was in 1963, and she continues to be a training ship with yearly instruction trips for the graduating naval cadets as well as a traveling goodwill ambassador, having covered more than 800,000 nautical miles (1,500,000 km) across all seas, visited about 500 ports in more than 70 countries, and trained more than 10,000 Navy sailors.

Pride of Baltimore II is scheduled to arrive at noon Friday, June 10, 2016, as part of the Parade of Sail, and will dock at the Otter Berth next to Waterside. Pride of Baltimore II was commissioned in 1988 as a sailing memorial to her immediate predecessor, the original Pride of Baltimore, which was tragically sunk by a white squall off Puerto Rico in 1986, taking her captain and three crew members down with her. Both ships were built in the Inner Harbor as reproductions of 1812-era topsail schooners, the type of vessels, called Baltimore Clippers that helped America win the War of 1812 and finally secure its freedom. Since her commissioning, Pride II has sailed nearly 200,000 miles, and visited over 200 ports in 40 countries in North, South, and Central America, Europe, and Asia.

Facts: Pride of Baltimore II
• Overall Length: 157 Feet
• Height: 107 Feet
• 12 crew members

• Kalmar Nyckel: Home Port: Wilmington, USA

The Kalmar Nyckel is a full-scale re-creation of the original 17th century ship, whose historic significance rivals that of the Mayflower. The present day Kalmar Nyckel serves as the Delaware region’s floating Academy and Goodwill Ambassador.

The original Kalmar Nyckel served as Governor Peter Minuit’s flagship for the 1638 expedition that founded the colony of New Sweden, establishing the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware Valley, Fort Christina, in present-day Wilmington, Delaware. She would make a total of four roundtrip crossings of the Atlantic, more than any other documented ship of the American colonial era.

The original Kalmar Nyckel was built by the Dutch in or about 1625 as a “Pinnace”-a class of vessels that could operate either as small war ships or as armed merchantmen. This was the “Golden Age” of Dutch naval power and seaborne world trade, and the Dutch were the most advanced naval architects and shipbuilders of the 17th century. Measuring 93 feet on deck and with a sparred length of 141 feet, she is stoutly built and remarkably seaworthy, characteristics that would serve her well throughout her long and remarkable career. Her original armament probably consisted of 12 six-pounder cast iron cannons, with two smaller swivel guns attached to the quarterdeck rails.

Facts: Kalmar Nyckel
• 3 Masted Tall Ship
• Overall Length: 141 Feet
• Height: 105 Feet
• Schooner Sultana: Home port: Maryland, USA
The Schooner SULTANA is a reproduction of a Boston-built merchant vessel that served for four years as the smallest schooner ever in the British Royal Navy. Manned by a 25-person crew, the original SULTANA patrolled the coastline of colonial North America from 1768 to 1772 enforcing the hated Townsend Acts or “Tea Taxes.” From this vantage point SULTANA and her crew had a unique perspective on the conflict that would ultimately become the American Revolution.
A key factor that led to SULTANA’s selection for replication was the wealth of primary documentation from the original vessel that was preserved by the British Navy. SULTANA’s reproduction is based directly on a 1768 Royal Navy survey of the original schooner, making it one of the most accurate 18th century replicas in the world today. In addition to these drawings, the Royal Navy also preserved more than 2,000 pages of the vessel’s log books, correspondence, and crew lists. These documents have proved to be an incredible resource for the schooner’s educational programs.
Facts: Schooner Sultana
• Overall Length: 97 Feet
• Height: 72 Feet

• Gazela: Home Port: Pennsylvania, USA

The Gazela is a barkentine ship, which means she has three masts. She is square rigged on the foremast only, the main and mizzens being fore and aft rigged. She was built in the shipyard of J. M. Mendes in Setubal, Portugal to fish the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. Her records, as she now stands, date from 1901 but there is good evidence that many of the timbers used in her construction are from the ship Gazella (spelled with two Ls) which was built in 1883. Portugese stone pine is the primary wood used in her hull and decks while the masts and spars are of Douglas fir.

Facts: Gazella
• 3 Masted Tall Ship
• Overall Length: 177.3 Feet
• Height: 94 Feet

• Godspeed: Home Port: Jamestown Settlement, USA

Godspeed, under Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, was one of the three ships (along with the Susan Constant and the Discovery) on the 1606-1607 voyages to the New World for the English Virginia Company of London. The journey resulted in the founding of Jamestown in the new Colony of Virginia.
In 1985, a replica of Godspeed sailed from London back to Virginia. She had a crew of 14 and stopped at many places that the original Godspeed visited including the Canary Islands and various places in the Windward Isles before sailing to Jamestown.
In May 2007, the United States Postal Service issued the first 41 cent denomination first class stamp. The stamp had an image of the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery. The Godspeed was also depicted on Virginia’s coin of the 50 State Quarters, in celebration of the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown.
Facts: Godspeed
• Overall Length: 88 Feet
• Height: 71.5 Feet

• USS Bainbridge: Home Port: Norfolk, USA

The USS Bainbridge was commissioned on November 12, 2005, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and has since transferred to her homeport in Norfolk, Virginia. The USS Bainbridge has made many Mediterranean deployments and participated in many Caribbean exercises.
Since her commissioning in 2005, the USS Bainbridge has been active in the Mediterranean Sea, but most of the attention she has garnered has been as a result of the failed hijacking attempt of the U.S.-flagged freighter MV Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates in April 2009, which ended with the release of the vessel’s Master, Captain Richard Phillips on April 12, 2009. After crewmen of the captured cargo vessel managed to retake the ship, the pirates retreated, taking the ship’s Master hostage in a lifeboat. The USS Bainbridge, Halyburton, and Boxer shadowed the pirates, and with FBI assistance attempted negotiations for the safe return of the captive captain until U.S. Navy SEAL snipers resolved the situation with deadly force. The story of this incident was turned into the 2013 motion picture titled, Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks. The USS Bainbridge was portrayed by sister ship USS Truxtun.
Facts & History: USS Bain Bridge

The Chesapeake Bay workboat is a type of traditional fishing boat used in the Chesapeake Bay. Watermen use these boats year round for everything from crabbing and oystering to catching fish or eels. The Chesapeake Bay Workboat is the official Virginia State Boat. Because of the decline in the seafood industry, the Chesapeake Bay waters that once flourished with these beautiful handmade boats has become a scarce sight. The Chesapeake Bay Workboat Parade on Saturday, June 11th at approximately 2:30pm highlights the creative decorating skills of the Watermen and their families as they dress their clam boats, crab boats and oyster boats to the “T” for this great family showcase! Be sure to come back on Sunday, June 12th at approximately noon to witness the power (450 Horsepower!) of these boats as they race down the Elizabeth River. The Chesapeake Bay Workboat Race at Norfolk Harborfest® is an event that the Watermen prepare for all year long. 40th Annual Norfolk Harborfest® Commemorative Poster:

Les Hall is a traditional artist whose perspective for viewing life in basic and simplistic forms is reflected in his artworks. An intuitive interest in architecture and water are evident in his ability to capture the warmth of his subject matter. He brings your imagination into his paintings by working with shadows and the effects of sunlight.

Les looks for “unique angles and perspectives” multiple roofs, protruding porches, cornices, ornate railings, intricate dental work, working boats and other impressions in his world. They represent the thoughts and imaginations of centuries of architect’s and designer’s impressions. The process that someone conceived, designed, built and put on display his or her thoughts in a house, landscape or boat for everyone to enjoy for infinity makes this world look different to everyone. Beginning in 1993, Les traveled to a variety of areas to vacation and has selected his subjects from some of those travels.

Painting interesting angles or corners of houses or boats or objects with character are evident in his work. “I get excited when I see the picturesque corner of someone’s home or favorite spot and I know I can capture it in a creative process.” He depicts views with light and shadows that captures the interest and imagination of the viewer. He works with watercolors and acrylics.

Born and raised in Salisbury, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the water has always inspired his work as an artist. After graduating from Elon University in 1977 and fortunately marrying his inspiring wife, Wanda, they moved to Northern Suffolk and have two daughters, Jordan and Cristin Pond, along with a son-in-law Christiaan Pond. They have lived in Suffolk, Virginia for over 35 years. Les has made a living as an industrial contractor for over 35 years.
His art work and prints are available for viewing in his home. For originals, prints, consignment or more, contact information:
