Norfolk-based Elrod rescues 4 from Caribbean Sea By Lauren King The Virginian-Pilot © June 28, 2012 NORFOLK The Navy frigate Elrod rescued four people from a small boat that was sinking in the Caribbean Sea. A maritime patrol aircraft spotted the submerged vessel on Tuesday and called the Elrod, which headed to the scene. The four mariners were clinging to the bow of the damaged boat when the frigate arrived, a news release from the Navy said. One of the four victims was lapsing in and out of consciousness during the rescue. The news release only said that the victim had life-threatening injuries. The four survivors were flown by helicopter to a hospital in Columbia for treatment. The Norfolk-based Elrod is participating in Operation Martillo, which is targeting illicit trafficking routes in coastal waters along the Central American isthmus, the news release said.
