NORFOLK

The Eisenhower carrier strike group will return next week from a five-month deployment to the Middle East, the Navy announced Friday.

Nearly 6,000 sailors are part of the group, which consists of the aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower, the guided-missile cruisers Vicksburg and Gettysburg, and the guided-missile frigate Halyburton. Carrier Air Wing Seven was embarked aboard the Eisenhower and flew more than 4,600 combat sorties in Afghanistan.

The carrier is due back Thursday. The Vicksburg is due back Tuesday, and the Halyburton and Gettysburg are to return Friday.
