The Associated Press © July 13, 2009 NEWPORT NEWS After more than three years, the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson is back in the hands of the Navy. Northrop Grumman says it redelivered the nuclear-powered carrier to the Navy over the weekend following an extensive overhaul at the company's shipbuilding location in Newport News. The redelivery also follows sea trials. The overhaul included extensive modernization work to more than 2,300 compartments and hundreds of system upgrades. Work also included defueling and refueling the nuclear reactors. The USS Carl Vinson is the third ship of the Nimitz class to undergo an overhaul of this nature. It arrived in Newport News in November 2005. The overhaul took more than 20 million man-hours of work and more than 3,500 Northrop Grumman employees worked on the project during peak periods.
