By Kathy Adams The Virginian-Pilot © February 25, 2009 he attack submarine Toledo has returned to active Navy service after two years in the shipyard. Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding redelivered the Toledo to the Navy on Saturday after the sub successfully completed sea trials, the company announced Tuesday. It has been undergoing modernization at the company's Newport News shipyard since January 2007. The work included upgrading the Toledo's sonar, combat and weapons systems, and performing maintenance on the living areas and propulsion systems, Northrop Grumman said. The original contract was worth $175 million and was due for completion last summer, said Jennifer Dellapenta, a Northrop Grumman spokeswoman. But because of more than 2,000 changes to the original work order, the project took longer. The cost of the work still is being finalized, she said. Northrop Grumman originally built the Los Angeles-class submarine, which was commissioned in February 1995.
